Passenger management lacking

I arrived by car at the departure area for Terminal 2 on the early morning of August 30 at around 4:30 am just to find that there was no way I could park my car to drop me off at terminal curb. There were a lot of cabs, other cars dripping off passengers as well as cars that were parked. So I had to drive all to the way to the begging of the arrival area of Terminal 2. It is a walking distance between the departure and the arrival terminal areas but still it is not as easy as it sounds when you have luggage. The problem was the uncontrolled traffic of private and other vehicles including the parked one that no one was directing or enforcing control. At other times when departing from the Sofia airport I found traffic regulation but on this day at this hour. I even witness a quarrel between the a passenger trying to go the terminal on a crosswalk while a taxi was stopped on that same crosswalk. To my surprise, entering the terminal area I found long ques in front of the check in counters for Lufthansa and Ryanair. For some reason the ques were long, passengers were stressed out they can miss their flight without apparent reason. I was scheduled to depart on Lufthansa flight to Munich at 6:05 am. There was only one more flight at 6:30 am to Frankfurt that morning. So there were probably more then 100 people waiting to be checked for these flights. There were no announcements whatsoever as to any problem that might have been the reason for the long lines. The Lufthansa line was moving very slow. Close 5 am or just an hour before boarding noticed the line started to move much faster most likely because the 2 currently 2 counters now they opened 6 to speed up the checking in process. I checked for my flight the night before so I only needed to drop off my luggage and get the claim sticker. They told me Lufthansa counters did not have drop off counter to handle passenger that already had boarding passed when they previously checked-in online. Once I managed to check in my bags had to wait on another line to go through boarding pass check point that is followed by security checkpoint. The line for this phase of the trip was so chaotic. People were forming lines every each way. It was like heard trying to squeeze in a small passage. Only 2 officers were checking the boarding passes, so it was going really slow. The you take an escalator and end up on the upper floor at a small area where you yet again have to wait to go through security, followed by yet anther line to go through passport control. And not until then you can go to your departure gate. The lack of control of traffic outside the terminal was evident as well as the lack of any personnel to direct people inside the terminal or to put stations to control the lines in front of the airline counters or other areas of passengers passage. I saw several officers that appeared to me to be airport staff that simply were chitchatting at the terminal and doing nothing to help us. I barely made it for my flight even though I have arrived at the airport for a EU domestic flight 1:30 h prior to boarding. The men restroom at the departure terminal is miserable conditions and unsanitary. Tried to get online via there free wi-fi but at the end I couldn't connect. So having free WiFi at the airport as as good as not having it.

Looks like a budget airport, but at least no crowds and also good shopping

Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport is a relatively new site (the old one is Terminal 1, used mostly or only, not sure, for Wizz Air) . Usually Terminal 2, which hosts regular airlines, looks tidy, but this time I saw it looking like a budget airport: not well maintained, restrooms too few and lacking tissue paper and soap... Also, at gate B4 where I was waiting, the restroom for ladies had only 2 slots, so I had to wait on a queue for 10-15 minutes, worrying I will miss my flight. What was positive in my experience, was that even though now is high season in Bulgaria, with lots of tourists traveling, the waiting queues for checkin, border control, etc. were almost none. Also, the perfumery shop provides a very rich selection of fragrances and cosmetics with very low prices. All in all, I think Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport needs a refreshment and better WC maintenance.

Nothing more then the basics

I have to start with the cleanliness. Not so much at terminal area but rather at the Terminal 2 restrooms. There are 2 restrooms one each at departures and arrivals. I used the one at departures and the fist thing you'll notice is the door that it doesn't close. Basically anyone walking can see the urinals - you see what I am saying. There are 3 urinals but the divider between 2 of them was missing. The interior restroom doors were missing hangers or locks. There were no disposable seat-covers. The faucets at the sinks were manual instead of automatic to minimize contact with surfaces at the restroom.

The airport offers free WiFi but good luck with getting online. The signal is week and often you loose connection, so it is rather useless. Dining is very limited. At departures there is one coffee shop with one very indifferent waiter/server who doesn't greet you and much less smiles. The food and drink choice is very limited. There no point of taking about entertainment at the airport as such I was not able to notice. To access the airport, you can take Metro - very convenient.

The flight information is interesting. Black and white flat screen monitors display the departure information. I have notice, however. that the displays were missing the gate information. So you have a departing flight with status Boarding, but the information down't show at what Gate which is something standard at other major airports.

My luggage did not arrive

Arrived at the airport with a flight from Germany on Lufthansa, and found out that my luggage did not make it. had to file a claim for lost luggage. The office for such claims is cozy. In a small room right across form the luggage carousels is where you have to go. Had to wait for about 10 min before I was able to speak to a customer representative. The guy was courteous and took the time to explain me the procedure. I had an option when the luggage arrived to be delivered to my address but I refused. I preferred to pick it up myself at the airport. In case anything missing or the luggage is mishandled in any way to be able to file a damage claim on the spot. Generally, I don't trust these guys. My luggage arrived 24 hour later. I found about the whereabouts of the luggage from text messages form the airline that was supposed to handle my suitcase. The airport lost and found office did not call me. When I decided to call the airport office did not pick up the phone and I was not able to leave a voice message. To pick your luggage is a rather precarious procedure. At the time of filing the lost claim you are given a document stating you have a claim and a claim number. Make sure you carry the piece of paper when you come back. The access door to the claim office is at terminal 2 on the right side of the arrival doors. On the outside you can't tell that's the office as it says "Staff Only" on the door. You have to knock on the door, someone opens it from inside, takes your ID and claim papers and gives them back in a few minutes telling you if you have to wait to pick your luggage or to come back later. They made me wait for 1 hour outside that door. The overall customer experience getting my suitcase back is rather poor. The staff look indifferent, Noticed that security and other staff looked leisurely and were drinking coffee or other soft drinks all the time as if they were not at work but at some sort of Holiday. Notice that restrooms were unsanitary , the dining options were very limited and the WiFi is spotty.

Friendly Airport

I travel in and out of the Sofia Airport a few times a year. The airport can be considered small or regional even though is the biggest in the country and a major hub for all airlines in and out of Bulgaria airspace. Dining at the airport is simple. Do not expect to find anything beyond the basics. I gave it a 5-star rating for Ground Transportation options since now the airport is linked to the city of Sofia via a fast and convenient metro link located at Terminal 2. If you opt-out for a rent a car no problem find those as they are located on Arrival terminal. Since the airport is small, there is no problem of getting to your flight on time. if you arrive on time for departure. Flight Information is currently displayed on outdated tube monitors which badly need an upgrade, but they contain everything you need to know. Lines are typical as for every other airport, but automated check in kiosk help lines to move efficiently.
