Passenger management lacking
Looks like a budget airport, but at least no crowds and also good shopping
Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport is a relatively new site (the old one is Terminal 1, used mostly or only, not sure, for Wizz Air) . Usually Terminal 2, which hosts regular airlines, looks tidy, but this time I saw it looking like a budget airport: not well maintained, restrooms too few and lacking tissue paper and soap... Also, at gate B4 where I was waiting, the restroom for ladies had only 2 slots, so I had to wait on a queue for 10-15 minutes, worrying I will miss my flight. What was positive in my experience, was that even though now is high season in Bulgaria, with lots of tourists traveling, the waiting queues for checkin, border control, etc. were almost none. Also, the perfumery shop provides a very rich selection of fragrances and cosmetics with very low prices. All in all, I think Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport needs a refreshment and better WC maintenance.
Nothing more then the basics
I have to start with the cleanliness. Not so much at terminal area but rather at the Terminal 2 restrooms. There are 2 restrooms one each at departures and arrivals. I used the one at departures and the fist thing you'll notice is the door that it doesn't close. Basically anyone walking can see the urinals - you see what I am saying. There are 3 urinals but the divider between 2 of them was missing. The interior restroom doors were missing hangers or locks. There were no disposable seat-covers. The faucets at the sinks were manual instead of automatic to minimize contact with surfaces at the restroom.
The airport offers free WiFi but good luck with getting online. The signal is week and often you loose connection, so it is rather useless. Dining is very limited. At departures there is one coffee shop with one very indifferent waiter/server who doesn't greet you and much less smiles. The food and drink choice is very limited. There no point of taking about entertainment at the airport as such I was not able to notice. To access the airport, you can take Metro - very convenient.
The flight information is interesting. Black and white flat screen monitors display the departure information. I have notice, however. that the displays were missing the gate information. So you have a departing flight with status Boarding, but the information down't show at what Gate which is something standard at other major airports.
My luggage did not arrive
I travel in and out of the Sofia Airport a few times a year. The airport can be considered small or regional even though is the biggest in the country and a major hub for all airlines in and out of Bulgaria airspace. Dining at the airport is simple. Do not expect to find anything beyond the basics. I gave it a 5-star rating for Ground Transportation options since now the airport is linked to the city of Sofia via a fast and convenient metro link located at Terminal 2. If you opt-out for a rent a car no problem find those as they are located on Arrival terminal. Since the airport is small, there is no problem of getting to your flight on time. if you arrive on time for departure. Flight Information is currently displayed on outdated tube monitors which badly need an upgrade, but they contain everything you need to know. Lines are typical as for every other airport, but automated check in kiosk help lines to move efficiently.
